Feline Stomatitis Treatment Helped Sophie Keep Her Smile

She had no idea how much her life was about to change.

Sophie’s feline stomatitis treatment journey is a reminder that preserving comfort, function, and quality of life sometimes means looking beyond traditional approaches.

When Feline Stomatitis Treatment Offered Another Possibility

She had been adopted through a shelter after a difficult start to life — underweight, frightened, and with a history of juvenile pregnancy.

But she landed exactly where she needed to be.

Her family, who are much-loved members of the Vetland community, had just experienced a heartbreaking loss. When Sophie came into their lives, she had no idea how good she was about to have it in her new furever home.

However, it was a journey. On her first health check, we discovered she was suffering from severe feline gingivostomatitis.

This condition causes significant inflammation within the mouth, affecting the gums, oral tissues, and extending all the way to the back of her throat.

Symptoms of pain in cats can be subtle and easily missed. It’s often not until we see a change in their personality after treatment that we truly understand how uncomfortable they may have been.

The current gold-standard treatment for feline stomatitis is full-mouth or near-full-mouth extractions, often combined with lifelong medical management to help control inflammation.

Cats can absolutely live happy and comfortable lives without teeth.
But teeth are important for more than eating.

Cats use their teeth constantly:

  • grooming between their toes and nibbling through their coat
  • carrying toys
  • wrestling and playing with their housemates
  • interacting with their environment

Whenever possible, preserving healthy teeth can help maintain these normal behaviours and quality-of-life experiences.

When we assessed Sophie’s mouth under anaesthesia, some teeth were unfortunately too diseased to save. However, most others sat in a grey zone — teeth we hoped we might be able to preserve if we could better control the underlying inflammation.

After performing a thorough dental treatment and removing the unsalvageable teeth, we started Sophie on a new combination medical therapy aimed at controlling the inflammatory component of her disease.

Then came the hard part: daily medication for a very sassy tortoiseshell cat.

The medication needed to be applied directly to Sophie’s gums, which required patience, creativity, and commitment from her family. Sophie, true to tortie form, had very strong opinions about this arrangement.

But her family persisted because they could see how much better she was beginning to feel.

A Remarkable Transformation

Over the following months, Sophie transformed.

She gained weight.
Her coat became glossy and soft again.
Her energy returned.
Her mischievous personality came shining through.

Most importantly, the pain disappeared.

And — most remarkably — she was able to keep many of her remaining teeth.

For Sophie and her family, that outcome meant so much more than simply avoiding extractions. It meant preserving comfort, normal behaviour, and quality of life in a way that has rarely been possible for cats with this condition.

Sophie’s story is also a reminder of how quickly veterinary medicine continues to evolve.

New therapies and changing treatment approaches are creating opportunities for some pets that simply did not exist before. Whilst not every patient will be a candidate for tooth preservation, stories like Sophie’s show just how meaningful those possibilities can be.

We’re incredibly proud of Sophie, deeply grateful to her dedicated family, and very excited about what the future may hold for cats living with this challenging condition.
