• What are vaccinations?

  Vaccinations are like a training exercise for your pet’s immune system. They contain a harmless version of the disease, allowing your pet’s immune system to recognize and fight off the real infection when it appears. Essentially, vaccinations prepare your pet’s body to defend itself against common and dangerous diseases. Regular vaccinations ensure their immune system stays sharp and ready to respond.

• How often do my pets need vaccinations?

  The frequency of vaccinations depends on the disease being protected against. For example:

  • Canine parvovirus vaccines are typically administered every three years.
  • Kennel cough (canine cough) vaccinations need to be given annually. We administer this vaccination as an oral solution as it is most effective, but also most comfortable for your pet.
  • Our veterinarians will guide you on the specific vaccination schedule that’s right for your pet based on their needs and lifestyle.

• Which vaccinations does my pet need?

  Pets require core vaccinations, which are considered essential for protecting against the most widespread and harmful diseases. These vaccines are necessary not only to keep your pet healthy but also to allow them access to services like puppy schools, boarding facilities, and daycares. The core vaccinations for a dog are known as C5, and include coverage for 5 diseases; parvovirus, hepatitis virus, distemper and two types of kennel cough. The core vaccinations for a cat are known as F3 and include feline rhinotracheitis virus, feline calicivirus and panleukopenia. Additional vaccinations, such as for leptospirosis or feline immunodeficiency virus may also be beneficial for your pet, depending on their lifestyle.

• Why are vaccinations important for the community?

  Vaccinating your pet not only protects them but also helps safeguard the broader pet community. When pets are consistently and widely vaccinated, it reduces the spread of diseases, especially among vulnerable pets like puppies, kittens, and older animals with weaker immune systems. By keeping up with vaccinations, you’re doing your part in protecting all pets in the community, as well as safeguarding your own pet!

• Do pets need yearly vaccinations?

  After some time, your pet’s immune system may "forget" what certain viruses/bacteria look like, meaning their immunity can weaken. Annual vaccinations serve as a reminder for the immune system, keeping it strong and ready to fight off potential infections. For certain diseases, like kennel cough, yearly vaccines are critical to maintain effective protection.

  If you have concerns about routine vaccinations, rather than forgoing vaccinations entirely, consider annual blood testing to measure antibody titers. This can provide insight as to whether your pet, as a unique individual, actually requires a booster vaccination or whether it can be safely delayed.

Terms and Conditions

This offer is available exclusively to senior cats and dogs aged 7 years or older at VetLand Hospital and Emergency. It includes a complimentary blood screen as a general health assessment for eligible pets. Please note the following terms:

• Eligibility

  The offer applies only to cats and dogs aged 7 years or older.

• Patient Comfort

  If a pet is non-compliant, anxious, or stressed during the procedure, we may offer anxiety relief options. If necessary, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled. Any sedatives or calming medications required will be billed at our standard rates.

• Screening Limitations

  This blood screen is a preliminary screening test only and may not provide a complete diagnostic picture. If further tests are recommended based on the screening results, they will be discussed and offered at standard rates.

• Additional Testing

  If specific tests beyond the standard screening are deemed necessary, they will be recommended, and charges will apply should you choose to proceed.

• Collection Fee

  A small fee applies for the blood collection service.
