Puppy Dental Crown Extensions Helped Ginger Keep Her Forever Smile
Have you ever wondered if your puppy's teeth are growing the way they should? Puppy dental crown extensions can protect growing teeth when retained baby teeth (persistent deciduous teeth) and bite problems threaten a lifetime of comfort.
Puppy Dental Crown Extensions Gave Ginger a Pain-Free Bite
Ginger travelled all the way from East Gippsland after her local veterinarian noticed her teeth weren't developing normally. What looked like a small dental problem was already putting her on the path to pain.
While Ginger was asleep for her dental procedure, we discovered several concerns. Some retained baby teeth were refusing to fall out, leaving adult teeth crowded and trapping food and debris between them.
One baby tooth had fractured and needed repair, while another adult tooth was erupting too narrowly. Most importantly, Ginger's lower canine teeth were growing inward and beginning to press into the roof of her mouth every time she closed her jaw.
Dr. Vicky took X-rays of Ginger's baby teeth to determine how much of each tooth needed to be extracted, noting that these teeth may have begun to reabsorb.
Making Room for a Healthy Smile
Dr. Vicky's goal wasn't simply to straighten Ginger's teeth. It was to save her healthy permanent canine teeth and give her a comfortable bite for life.
We removed the retained baby teeth that were blocking normal eruption and repaired the damaged baby tooth. Then we placed temporary dental crown extensions to gently guide Ginger's lower canine teeth outward each time she bit down.
This treatment works with a puppy's natural growth and is most successful between five and six months of age. Guiding the teeth early often prevents lifelong problems and avoids the removal of healthy permanent teeth.
Without treatment, narrow canine teeth can lead to:
- Painful injury to the roof of the mouth.
- A hole forming between the mouth and nose.
- Painful inflammation around partially erupted teeth.
- Loss of healthy permanent canine teeth.

Saving Ginger's "Tennis Ball Teeth"
Dr. Vicky lovingly calls canine teeth a puppy's "tennis ball teeth." They're the teeth dogs use to carry toys, play fetch, and enjoy the simple moments that make life fun.
Watching Ginger wake up with a healthier bite was exactly why we love what we do. Her permanent canine teeth are now developing in a much better position, giving her every chance of enjoying a lifetime of happy smiles, tennis balls, and pain-free adventures.
