How Veterinary Dental Surgery Helped Bronte Breathe Again
Bronte is a young boxer — and if you know boxers, they are all energy, all the time. They make it their occupation to make sure you notice them.
Her story is also a reminder that veterinary dental surgery can involve far more than teeth alone.
When Veterinary Dental Surgery Revealed a Hidden Dental Problem
So when Bronte came to see us, and she was falling asleep whilst sitting upright, something was clearly wrong.
She had been struggling with persistent nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, extreme lethargy, and had lost so much weight that her ribs were visible. Her mum noticed she was sleeping more, tiring easily, and no longer behaving like her usual happy, energetic self.
Most concerning of all, Bronte was having difficulty breathing comfortably at night. Her mum became so worried that she was placing a small straw near her nostril to help improve airflow while she slept — and Bronte would calmly allow it.
Given how much Bronte had changed, we knew something significant was going on.
Bronte had been diagnosed earlier in the week at a local specialist hospital with an unerupted tooth hidden beneath the gum. This hidden dental condition had developed a large cyst, expanding through the bones of her face and into her nose, blocking airflow.
It was at this point that Bronte’s mum took her scan report and sought Dr. Vicky’s surgical opinion. In the coming days, Bronte underwent advanced veterinary dental surgery to remove the cyst.
A Life-Changing Improvement
The change was immediate.
With her breathing improved, Bronte quickly returned to being the bright, playful boxer her family knew so well. Her energy returned, she began gaining weight again, and she was finally able to rest comfortably — no straw needed.
Bronte’s story is a reminder that dental and oral disease can affect far more than just the mouth. In some cases, problems hidden beneath the gums can have a significant impact on breathing, comfort, sleep, and overall quality of life.
Our pets are often remarkably resilient, and many tolerate significant oral disease long before obvious signs appear.
We’re so grateful to have been part of Bronte’s journey back to feeling like herself again, and to see her enjoying all the things a young boxer loves most.
