Microchipping

In Victoria, all puppies and kittens are required to be microchipped before they are even advertised for adoption. So, most pet’s we see have already long since had their microchips.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a small electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice. When scanned, it transmits a set of numbers which is unique to your pet. That set of numbers is stored in a national database and, hopefully, corresponds to your contact details.

How is a microchip implanted?

There’s no hiding the truth – it is a large needle, it is gently introduced under the skin and pops the microchip into place. Your pet’s microchip must be implanted between your pet’s shoulder blades. It is important that after it has been placed, that you avoid petting your pet in that area for approximately 1 week. Excessive activity can cause the microchip to pop out, or start to migrate to an undesirable location – such as over the bottom of the chest or underneath the neck.

Why is my pet’s microchip scanned at each visit?

As each microchip number is unique, this helps us to confirm the identity of your pet. However, it’s also an important tool to ensure that your microchip is still working. It is possible that they stop transmitting, in which case they need to be replaced.

How can I update my contact details listed under my pet’s microchip?

Most Victorian pet microchips are stored in the Central Animal Records database, you will need to contact them directly in order to amend your contact information.
