Dental Crown Extensions for Puppies: How Nala's Smile Was Saved
Have you ever looked at your puppy and wondered whether everything is developing exactly as it should? Sometimes, the smallest dental problem during puppyhood can become a much bigger issue later in life. This is one of those stories.
For growing puppies, early dental crown extensions and veterinary dental care can help guide healthy tooth development before lifelong discomfort begins.
A Second Chance for Nala
Nala is a 5-month-old rescue Staffy, immediately beloved by her new family.
Like many young rescue dogs, she came into her new life with a second chance — and a lot of growing still to do.
Her family veterinarian identified a condition called base narrow malocclusion, where the lower canine teeth (or “fangs”) erupt in too narrow a position. In Nala’s case, the tips of these teeth were beginning to angle inward toward the palate.
At this stage of life, those teeth are still actively erupting, which means we often have an opportunity to guide their final position as the jaw continues to develop.
This is one of the reasons early dental crown extensions can be so effective—they work with a puppy's natural growth while the teeth are still erupting
They referred Nala for treatment to Dr. Vicky.
How Dental Crown Extensions Helped
After discussing options with Nala’s family, we decided on an interceptive orthodontic approach to help encourage a more normal alignment.
This involved two key steps:
- removing retained baby teeth that were preventing normal positioning of the adult canines
- placing composite “crown extensions” (very tall dental fillings) to gently guide the lower canines outward whenever Nala closed her mouth
This technique works by subtly redirecting how the teeth meet, encouraging the lower canines to tip into a healthier position as they continue to erupt.
Nala went home the same day bright, happy, and very much still a busy Staffy puppy.
An Unexpected Setback
She was so excited when she got home - the zoomies took over.
And that’s when it happened…
Nala accidentally collided with a wall, breaking off one of her brand-new extensions and causing a chip to her permanent canine tooth! Thankfully, the deeper part of the tooth was not affected.
We adjusted her recovery plan, replaced the crown extension the next morning, and added additional measures to help Nala settle.

A Healthy Smile for the Future
Two weeks later, the orthodontic appliances were removed, and a protective filling was placed over the small enamel fracture.
Nala recovered beautifully.
More importantly, her lower canine teeth are now in a far healthier position, eliminating the risk of future trauma to the palate and helping her maintain a comfortable, functional bite as she grows.
Cases like Nala’s are a good example of why timing matters in puppy dentistry. When we intervene during development, we often have more options to guide tooth position and avoid more complex problems later in life.
Not every case goes perfectly in a straight line — especially when working with enthusiastic puppies who have their own plans — but with careful planning, close monitoring, and a very dedicated family, Nala has a great long-term outcome ahead of her.
And yes — she’ll absolutely still be able to hold onto her tennis balls.
